FRC: Kitchen

A warm atmosphere is established when parents and staff sit down to eat together.
"If you feed them they will come."
Ask anyone where people want to gather at a party; inevitably it is the kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of the home. It can also be the heart of a family resource center. While facilities may range from the very modest - perhaps a microwave and small area for eating lunches - to a full blown kitchen, it is important to carefully consider how food and eating will be incorporated into your family resource center.
Food sharing is universally a way that people connect with one another. It is intergenerational, not gender specific, and multi-cultural.
Many family resource centers have begun modestly with plans to serve food at meetings over time, and this has evolved into cooking classes that have brought people into the center who might never have participated otherwise.
Food is also a wonderful way to share cultural traditions.
