Vision Statements

On this page, you will find examples of vision statements from FRCs and other family strengthening organizations.

A vision can be defined as "a dream about what the future will look like" (Georgia Academy, 1997, 62). The process of developing a vision requires community members to look into the future and envision a desired state for themselves and their wider community. Creating a vision statement requires the participants to "think big." While there are plenty of parts of the planning process that require detail-oriented thinking, this is not one of them.

  • A vision is an expansive and future-oriented expression of the community's direction. Clear and compelling visions of the future have great power. It is important to set sights high. An inspiring vision motivates people to act.
  • A shared vision guides the planning of services for the neighborhood or community. It shapes the means and the ends of desired progress. It also shapes the development of the network of services and supports one chooses for children and families, in that the vision is larger than the family support center.
  • A shared vision statement unifies people. A vision that is shared by neighborhood residents, school personnel, agency staff, and other stakeholders becomes the reason for working together. The degree to which each person or group is committed to the vision is the measure of the vision's shared quality.

Vision statements should describe the results that the community wishes to achieve for children, youth, and families.
